Wed 23 Oct – Sun 17 Nov. Tickets will go on sale soon.

Event Information

What is Illuminight ?

This autumn, Dean Castle Country Park will be opening after dark with a magical outdoor light event. This is an unaccompanied tour of the grounds following a designated route with installations, hands on activities, illuminations and lighting.

Where is Illuminight taking place?

The event takes place at Dean Castle Country Park Kilmarnock, KA3 1XB. The Illuminight event starts at the main entrance by the new visitor centre and follows a trail through the Country Park. The trail involves being outdoors for approximately one and a half hours.

When does Illuminight take place?

Visitors are invited to enjoy Dean Castle Country Park after dark from Wednesday 23 October – Sunday 17 November 2019.

How long does the trail take?

The Illuminight experience is a one and a half kilometre trail (approx.) and involves being outdoors for approximately one and a half hours. Feel free to take your time and enjoy the event at your own pace. Make a night of it and enjoy the food and drink village, toasted marshmallow stations and vintage funfair, with lots to enjoy throughout the evening.

Each timed session has a set capacity and we expect sessions to be extremely popular. We recommend you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Where does Illuminight start and finish?

The outdoor event trail starts and finishes by the main entrance off Dean Road by the new visitor centre.

Please leave quietly at the end of the event out of consideration for our neighbours and place all litter in the bins provided.

Will Dean Castle be open during the Illuminight event?

Please note that the buildings will be in the midst of ongoing renovations and will remain closed throughout the event.

Is the event suitable for children and buggy friendly?

Yes absolutely, the event route has been designed for all ages and is perfect for families and buggy access. Illuminight is accessible but please note that some paths can be steep, and care should be taken. Patrons are also advised as the event takes place on a woodland trail that the underfoot conditions will not always be flat and that there may be uneven surfaces. For further reassurance, you may want to bring a small torch to assist you on the route. Our event stewards and marshals are available throughout the trail to assist and advise during the event.

Are there any session times which are not attended by children?

There are no specific times that are solely for adults, or solely for families. However, our early evening sessions are most popular with families and our later sessions midweek less so.

What should I wear?

Illuminight is an all outdoor, evening event in Scotland. Think practical and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for a Scottish winter! Fingers crossed for good weather but as we know, Scottish weather can change hourly with a mix of crisp winter nights or showers. Layering is best and something waterproof is advisable, as is sturdy footwear. We recommend either wellies or walking boots.

What if it is raining?

All visitors are reminded that this is an outdoor event and the weather may be inclement. There are no covered areas during the walk and it is your own responsibility to wear appropriate warm and waterproof outdoor clothing and footwear.

Can I bring my dog?

We are big dog fans but unfortunately due to the nature of the event (a large audience, loud soundscapes, bright lights and cables) it is not suitable for them, because of this only assistance dogs will be allowed at the event.

Please be aware that the site can be busy in places, and that there are interactive installations, lights, cables and speakers positioned throughout the route often situated at curious doggy level. Assistance dogs in training are welcome.

Am I allowed to bring food and drink into the event?

No food, alcoholic drinks, glass or cans may be brought into the event. Refreshments will be at the event, located at designated areas on the route, providing quality local food and drink. Keeping hands and tummies warm on the journey through the park are seasonal warm beverages, the option to toast marshmallows and both soft and alcoholic drinks.

Alcoholic drinks will not be served to anyone under the age of 18 and a challenge 25 policy will be operating during the event. Any alcohol brought onto site will breach our licensing agreement and will be confiscated.

Are there toilets in the Park?

Yes, the Park’s permanent toilet facilities are open throughout the event with several toilet locations clearly signposted throughout the trail.

Accessibility

What are the facilities and access for people with disabilities?

Dean Castle Country Park is accessible to those with reduced mobility and specific needs, please note that some paths along the event route can be steep and care should be taken when navigating. Patrons are also advised that the underfoot conditions will not always be flat and that there may be uneven surfaces. Carers must be capable of supporting their companion with specific needs in the event of an emergency or evacuation of the area. Carers should be over 16 years old.

Parts of the event trail are immersive ‘experiences’ with multiple elements all at the same time (lighting, Sound, Fire). This can be overwhelming to guests with additional needs and hidden disabilities. We suggest attending the event on an early session as the natural lighting levels will reduce the contrast of darkness.

Please contact us if you have any questions about access and additional assistance on illuminight@unique-events.co.uk

Will there be allocated parking for people with disabilities?

There are disabled parking bays available within the Dean Castle Country Park car park entrance to the event located on Dean Road.

Will there be wheelchair or mobility scooters available on site for public use?

Unfortunately, there are currently no wheelchair or mobility scooters available at the venue, you will be required to provide your own mobility aids.

Are there disabled toilets on site?

Accessible toilets can be located within both the Visitor and Rural Life centres. There is also a public toilet block located behind the castle which has accessible facilities

Will there be Strobe Lighting as part of the installation?

There will be no strobe effects during the event. However, those with a light sensitivity should be aware that there may be areas where there will be flickering or fast paced flashing lights at low intensity.

Will the event be cancelled in the event of inclement weather?

Inevitably bad weather can affect any open-air event. No refunds will be offered if the weather is inclement but the event is safe to go ahead.

If the event is cancelled by the Park or Event Organiser for safety reasons (including extreme weather), tickets will be exchanged where possible or refunded within seven working days. Visitors will be contacted by email

Will a decision to cancel the event be made in advance?

If all sessions on any night are required to be cancelled due to forecasted extreme weather, a decision to cancel will be taken as early as possible. If a decision is made to cancel the full night’s event, we will endeavour to contact all visitors by email and the information will be advertised on the official website and social media platforms.

For safety reasons, a decision may be made at any time during the evening to abandon, postpone or delay any or all the advertised sessions. This information will be advertised on the official website and social media platforms.

Sponsorship and funding

Information about the Dean Castle Country Park

Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock is one of Ayrshire’s most popular and well-loved destinations and a fantastic free day out for all the family.

In July 2015, it was awarded £3.34m from Heritage Lottery Fund towards a £4.7m development programme. This ambitious multi-million pound development programme for the park had 5 key elements to encourage visitors to participate in and enjoy our local, natural and cultural heritage.

The funding for the project has allowed for an improved and extended path network around the park opening up areas of the park that were previously inaccessible, restoration of the designed landscape, a new rural life centre, improved play park, an upgraded and extended visitor centre which now incorporates a residential centre and a new activity programme.

Dean Castle is one of Ayrshire’s best preserved castles and was the stronghold of the Boyds, Lords of Kilmarnock, for over 400 years. Their connections with Robert the Bruce made them one of the most powerful families in Scotland. Steeped in history, with world class collections and regularly changing exhibitions, Dean Castle and its estate was gifted to the people of Kilmarnock in the 1970’s by Lord Howard de Walden and has been enjoyed by millions of visitors since.
