Event Information

What is Illuminight?

This October to November, Dean Castle Country Park will be opening after dark with a magical outdoor light event to celebrate the relaunch of the newly renovated and restored attraction. This is an unaccompanied tour of the grounds following a designated route with installations, illuminations and lighting of the plants, paths and selected buildings.

Where is Illuminight taking place?

The event is being staged at Dean Castle Country Park Kilmarnock, KA3 1XB. The Illuminight event starts at the main entrance by the new visitor centre and follows a trail through the Country Park, ending at the spectacular castle building . The trail involves being outdoors for approximately one and a half hours.

When does Illuminight take place?

Visitors are invited to enjoy Dean Castle Country Park after dark from Wednesday 25 October until Sunday 19 November 2017.

How long does the trail take?

The Illuminight experience is a one and a half kilometre trail (approx.) and involves being outdoors for approximately one and a half hours.

Each timed session has a set capacity and we expect sessions to be extremely popular. We recommend you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Where does Illuminight start and finish?

The outdoor event trail starts at the main entrance off Dean Road by the new visitor centre then loops around the newly renovated Rural Life area through the deer park and past the Old Quarry Pond before concluding at Dean Castle. View the trail map here.

Will Dean Castle be open during the Illuminight event?

Please note that Dean Castle will be illuminated as part of the event, the buildings will only be viewed externally and will remain closed throughout the event.

Will there be Strobe Lighting as part of the installation?

There will be no strobe effects during the event. However, those with a light sensitivity should be aware that there may be areas where there will be flickering or fast paced flashing lights at low intensity.

Is the event suitable for children and buggy friendly?

Yes absolutely, the event route has been designed to entertain and is perfect for families. Illuminight is accessible but please note that some paths can be steep and care should be taken.  Patrons are also advised as the event takes place on a woodland trail that the underfoot conditions will not always be flat and that there may be uneven surfaces. Alternative routes will be provided if unable to navigate fixtures such as stairs and rough terrain – for further reassurance, you may want to bring a small torch to assist you on the route. Our event stewards and marshals are available throughout the trail to assist and advise during the event.

What should I wear?

Illuminight is an all outdoor, evening event in Scotland. Think practical and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for a Scottish winter! Fingers crossed for good weather but as we know, Scottish weather can change hourly with a mix of crisp winter nights or showers. Layering is best and something waterproof is advisable, as is sturdy footwear. We recommend either wellies or walking boots.

What if it is raining?

All visitors are reminded that this is an outdoor event and the weather may be inclement. There are no covered areas during the walk and it is your own responsibility to wear appropriate warm and waterproof outdoor clothing and footwear.

Can I bring my dog?

We are big dog fans but unfortunately due to the nature of the event (lots of people, loud soundscapes, bright lights and pesky cables) we don’t think it’s suitable or enjoyable for our furry friends. Because of this only guide dogs will be allowed at the event.

Am I allowed to bring food and drink into the event?

No food, alcoholic drinks, glass or cans may be brought into the event. Refreshments will be at the event, located at designated areas on the route, providing quality local food and drink. Keeping hands and tummies warm on the journey through the park are seasonal warm beverages, the option to toast marshmallows and both soft and alcoholic drinks. Alcoholic drinks will not be served to anyone under the age of 18 and a challenge 25 policy will be operating during the event.

Can I bring a camera?

We would highly recommend you do but professional photography equipment will not be permitted without prior permission from the event organisers (i.e. cameras with interchangeable lenses).

There will be so many amazing installations to photograph and remember at this event, please use Smart Phones and compact digital cameras to share images via social media.

Sponsorship and funding

Information about the Dean Castle Country Park

Dean Castle Country Park in Kilmarnock is one of Ayrshire’s most popular and well-loved destinations and a fantastic free day out for all the family.

In July 2015, it was awarded £3.34m from Heritage Lottery Fund towards a £4.7m development programme. This ambitious multi-million pound development programme for the park had 5 key elements to encourage visitors to participate in and enjoy our local, natural and cultural heritage.

The funding for the project has allowed for an improved and extended path network around the park opening up areas of the park that were previously inaccessible, restoration of the designed landscape, a new rural life centre, improved play park, an upgraded and extended visitor centre which now incorporates a residential centre and a new activity programme.

Dean Castle is one of Ayrshire’s best preserved castles and was the stronghold of the Boyds, Lords of Kilmarnock, for over 400 years. Their connections with Robert the Bruce made them one of the most powerful families in Scotland. Steeped in history, with world class collections and regularly changing exhibitions, Dean Castle and its estate was gifted to the people of Kilmarnock in the 1970’s by Lord Howard de Walden and has been enjoyed by millions of visitors since.
